Position Overview

The Director of Internal Communications will support and drive critical messaging to Carpenter Technology's key internal decision-makers and employee stakeholders. The role will be responsible for the implementation and execution of a consistent, timely, and brand-conforming long-term strategy by leveraging existing communication vehicles, and developing new strategies for a changing workforce. With a specific focus on increasing employee engagement among the Production and Maintenance workforce (P&M), the incumbent will drive local internal communication strategies at the manufacturing facilities. The role will report to the Vice President of Human Resources, but will work very closely with members of Carpenter's Leadership Team on critical communication initiatives. These initiatives could extend beyond Carpenter's internal audience to include shareholders, customers, and our Board of Directors.

Routinely writing for the President and Chief Executive Officer, additional success in this position will come with the establishment of close working partnerships with site/business leaders, Human Resource Business Partners, and Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) personnel. These individuals will drive local internal communications with the guidance and support from the Director of Internal Communications.

This position will also work closely with our Commercial organization, specifically as it pertains to branding, customer communications, trade show preparation, and coordinated collaterals in the areas of mergers, acquisitions, and strategic partnerships. The Director of Internal Communications will assist in maintaining the Investor Relations section of our public website, specifically as it relates to the Board of Directors and Executive Leadership.

The candidate will need to fully understand the entire business structure, operating segments, locations, and protocol for communicating with specific international locations. This role is highly visible and requires a strong sense of business acumen and professionalism.

Essential Job Duties
  • Manage and drive all internal communications using existing infrastructure such as digital signs, email, intranet, direct mail, and company-wide device notification system
  • Manage a staff of two including our Communications Coordinator and Communications Manager
  • Develop the internal messaging architecture for Carpenter Technology and align with broader company values, strategy, and brand initiatives
  • Collaborate with senior management and operational management to generate support for the communication strategy and how it supports Carpenter's long-term growth strategy
  • Establish metrics and measure contact success across all internal audiences
  • Provide oversight, content management, and maintenance for >120 digital signs across the company
  • Manage all media relations activity and collaborate with Marketing Communications for promotional opportunities
  • Draft and manage approval protocol for external press releases
  • Coordinate and manager annual Impact Awards event
  • Promote the understanding of and help establish focused activities for public affairs, corporate citizenship, and corporate accountability
  • Manage the internal communications budget and vendors

  • Minimum of 10 years' global, enterprise (B2B), internal communications experience
  • Minimum of a four-year degree in Journalism, Public Relations, or English; master's degree preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Experience with industrial manufacturing organizations desired
  • Expertise in corporate, social media, or marketing communications is desired
  • Proven ability to manage external vendors, diverse viewpoints, and excel in a changing company culture
  • Strong writing skills with experience crafting external communication materials (press releases, blog posts, media kits, etc.)
  • Must be able to create a sense of credibility in all communications and interactions, and to serve as an internal communications leader of the company
  • Experience launching and maintaining visibility initiatives that increase awareness in key markets, enhance brand perception, and drive growth
  • Strong interpersonal, collaborative, and organizational skills
